Innovative Lightspell Art Installation
Last December, six new TTC subway stations opened to the public. One in particular was the Pioneer Village station, located on the west side of York University. This unique station is the first and only station to cross over from Toronto the city of Vaughan.
Innovative Art Installation
This new station is unique as it is home to the Lightspell art installation, fabricated by GO Lighting Technologies Inc.
This incredible concept came from renowned design house realities:united in Berlin, Germany. Over the past five years, GO Lighting worked on the concept, revised the designs, and fabricated the final art exhibit.
This installation is more than just a series of light fixtures, it is an interactive art piece where the public can enter messages to be displayed throughout the station. These messages will remain visible until they are overwritten by another original message. This is truly one-of-a-kind and a sight to behold.
The technical aspects of the fixtures in this complex design presented some unique challenges. GO Lighting needed to develop specialized fabrication techniques while matching the artists’ vision for the design and ensuring that the installation could be constructed and function.
The installation’s integrated frame seamlessly blend into the fixture housings which provide the display with a uniform look and allow the fixture to be suspended securely in an ever-changing environment. The subway is prone to potentially large wind loads, expansion, and a variety of elements, and the installation must remain secure and function in the face of these difficult circumstances.
This intricate design required that we design and manufacture the installation using custom technical considerations.
Affixed to the frame are 16 custom made housings, incorporating a DMX input power supply and custom shaped LED light engine. Every piece of the construction was specially designed to handle the wild temperature swings and constant vibration.
Each fixture, was weather-sealed to IP65 standards and protected with a polycarbonate lens in conjunction with a well thought out PCB to provide a completely uniform illumination across the surface.
40 of these specialized units were fabricated and suspended from one side of the station to the other, spanning over 600 feet, from Toronto to Vaughan.
Expert Design, Manufacturing, & Installation
GO Lighting specializes in custom lighting fabrication, and we are especially proud of our work on the Pioneer Village TTC station project.
Our expert team is focused on achieving all the criteria to have a successful build while meeting the design intent, and using the latest technology to create outstanding luminaires that are both energy effective and exceed performance requirements.
In this project, we were able to design a 16 segment fixture, 10′ x 10′ square in size, and capable of delivering 16000 lumens at only 1000 watts and 7 amps with an L70 of over 200,000 hours.
By looking beyond what was possible, GO Lighting has brought together the expertise, the resources, and the vision to push beyond standard lighting. We can’t wait to do it again. Let us take your creativity into the real world.
